Two Things A Disciple Of Jesus Cannot Be Without
With the incredible advances in technology over the last few years, we now have a myriad of ways for people to stay connected. Phone call, text message, email, facebook message – it seems that we know more about the details of each others lives than we ever have before. We share what we had for lunch and what we are reading, we share our opinions and thoughts about movies, candidates and elections.
Surprisingly, although we are technically more ‘connected’ with each other than any other time in history, we are still a society of people experiencing relational poverty. We have every opportunity to connect to each other, but for the most part it is a surface connection.
Making Disciples The Way Jesus Did
If we study Jesus’ method for making disciples and then study how the early church repeated this pattern, we discern a blueprint that we can follow as well. Many of the churches in the Relational Discipleship Network use this simple blueprint, based on these four words.
Share:
- Jesus shared who he was through words and deeds – During their time of sharing life together, he taught them the truth about himself.
Connect:
- When people accepted his message, he invited them to connect with him in relationship.
Minister:
- As the disciples grew, Jesus trained them to minister to the lost and to his other followers.
Disciple
- Finally, after Jesus rose from the dead, he deployed his followers to disciple others.
We call this the SCMD methodology. Share, Connect, Minister, Disciple.
As Jesus’ disciples today, we share our lives with other people, eventually sharing the gospel – the good news about Jesus and what he has done for us and can do for them. We then connect with Christ and other believers in relationship through his church. Next, we help these new disciples take steps to grow, by supplying them with a place to minister in Jesus name. And finally, when they are ready, we deploy them, releasing them to disciple other people in the same way.
Jesus left us a blueprint for discipleship that transcends time and location. These principles are true in every situation and for every age, regardless of where we live or the size of our church.

Mark 16:15 Jesus Sends His Followers to Preach
15 He said to them, “You are to go to all the world and preach the Good News to every person.
1 Corinthians 9:16
16 I cannot be proud because I preach the Good News. I have been told to do it. It would be bad for me if I do not preach the Good News.
Connect
To God –
2 Timothy 4:14 Alexander, the man who makes things out of copper, has worked hard against me. The Lord will give him the pay that is coming to him. 15 Watch him! He fought against every word we preached.16 At my first trial no one helped me. Everyone left me. I hope this will not be held against them. 17 But the Lord was with me. He gave me power to preach the Good News so all the people who do not know God might hear. I was taken from the mouth of the lion.
To Small Group -family –
1 Thessa 5:11 So comfort each other and make each other strong as you are already doing.
To a purpose –
Romans 8:28 We know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are chosen to be a part of His plan.

Equip for Ministry –
Eph 4:11 Christ gave gifts to men. He gave to some the gift to be missionaries, some to be preachers, others to be preachers who go from town to town. He gave others the gift to be church leaders and teachers. 12 These gifts help His people work well for Him. And then the church which is the body of Christ will be made strong. 13 All of us are to be as one in the faith and in knowing the Son of God. We are to be full-grown Christians standing as high and complete as Christ is Himself.
Provide Ministry Opportunity –
1 Cor 16:15 You know that the families of Stephanas were the first Christians in the country of Greece. They are working for the Lord in helping His people. 16 I ask you to listen to leaders like these and work with them as well as others like them.
Release to a Ministry –
Acts 9:15 The Lord said to him, “Go! This man is the one I have chosen to carry My name among the people who are not Jews and to their kings and to Jews.
Release to be a Disciple –
Acts 6: 2 So the twelve missionaries called a meeting of the many followers and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the Word of God to hand out food. 3 Brothers, choose from among you seven men who are respected and who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. We will have them take care of this work. 4 Then we will use all of our time to pray and to teach the Word of God.”
