A newborn baby must be fed by its mother; but it must learn to feed itself, as it grows older. A newborn Christian must be taught and fed but must learn to feed himself or herself. The best way is to learn to trust and obey God‘s word. This means we need to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us as we read Scripture. Sometimes people think that reading Scripture is only for the trained pastor. This is not true. Every believer can be equipped to read the Scripture and feed himself or herself. The following is a simple but very effective method.
- Choose a passage of Scripture.
- Pray for guidance and read through the passage 2-3 times.
- Divide a blank page into 3 columns.
- In the first column write down: What does the passage say? (Then write the passage in your own words).
- In the second column write down: What does it mean? (Then write down what you believe the passage means).
- In the third column write down: What must I do? (Come up with 3 to 5 ―I must‖ statements).
Application:
Jesus taught us to do many things.
Read the following passages and explain what Jesus was saying we must do. I Must:
Mark 1:15 __________________________________________
Matt 28:19-20_______________________________________
Matt 6:5-15_________________________________________
Matt 22:37-39_______________________________________
Luke 6:36__________________________________________
Luke 10:25-37______________________________________
Luke 22:14-20______________________________________
Follow these instructions to put actions to the ―I must‖ statements:
Repent and Believe – walk away, and then make a U-turn coming back toward them.
Be Baptized – two hands together held out to the side and then lowering as into water.
Pray – hands in typical prayer sign.
- Make disciples – both hands crawling forward in air like a spider.
Love one another – hands folded across your heart.
Lords Supper – two hands side by side as holding bread and then breaking it.
Give – hands outstretched towards others.
Conclusion:
Spreading the Gospel
You are now a Christian! You are a child of God and a member of God‘s family. You have assurance of salvation. You can pray directly to God, have fellowship and devotional time with Him at any time. You are a member of His church, a blessed people. The most important thing now is that God calls you to spread the Gospel and teach others to obey all of His ways, and that those you teach must also proceed to teach even more people the good news of salvation. (2 Timothy 2:2)
Remember, there are four types of calls to share the Gospel:
- The Call from Heaven: the commandment of the Lord Jesus.
(Mark 16:15) __________________________________
_____________________________________________
- The Call from Hell: the rich man‟s plea to share the Gospel with his family.
(Luke 16:27–28) _______________________________
_____________________________________________
- The Call from Within: Paul was under compulsion to spread the Gospel.
(2 Cor. 5:14–15, 18–20) _________________________
____________________________________________
- The Call from Without: Paul heard the call from Macedonia to come.
(Acts 16:9) ____________________________________
Today each Christian should listen to the calls in their life and respond immediately.
We should not only lead people to become Christ followers, but also to become a successful “trainer” who trains others. A Disciple who makes Disciples! In this way you can rapidly spread the Gospel. (2 Tim. 2:2)
God‟s desire is for every Christian to share the Gospel, starting with those close and all the way to the ends of the earth! He will also lead many to begin their own new small group/church! (Acts 2:46–47)
You should immediately respond to God and pray for the body of Christ. Your life will be a blessing to God and others:
By leading people to believe in the Lord
- By starting new small groups/churches (at your own home or any place).
By training trainers.
Prayerfully consider how God has worked in your life over the past 6 weeks and what He is leading you to do going forward. How must your life change? What are you going to need to do for that to happen?
For those who are ready to take the next step in starting a new small group/church we now turn to a practical guide to help you in that process. We pray the Lord will Bless you in this life long journey of Disciples Making Disciples!
