Daily Devotions

Lesson 4b – Daily Devotions

Every learner will be able to:

 Say two things the devotional life is identified by.

 List three ways a devotional life will help a Christian.

 List and explain the importance of the five tools to help you grow in your spiritual life.

 Describe the three parts of a devotion.

 Develop a plan for daily devotions.

To really know a person you need to have regular contact with that person. In the same way, if you want to have a close relationship with God, it is helpful to ―set a time‖ just for God daily. We need to ―set a time with God‖ for a daily devotional.

Two simple parts that identify a devotional life.

  1. Talk with God through prayer.
  2. Let God speak to you by reading and reflecting on the Bible.

The purpose of our devotional life is to help us:

  1. Worship God – To honor Him!
  2. Fellowship with God – We share our concerns.
  3. Led by God – To know His will and do it.

The attitude of our devotional time

Suggestions and tools for your spiritual life:

Bible: Write down the Scripture; read and then write down what you learned from the reading. Meditate on the verse. Remember that you can‘t change what the Bible says, but you can write how it impacts your life. The Bible is the answer to four big questions. Where do I come from? Why do I exist? How should I live? Where will I go in the future?

Pen & Notebook: Write down what you sense God saying to you during your devotional time. ―And you shall remember all the ways which the Lord your God has led you‖ (Deu. 8:2). You can also write down the names and needs of those you are praying for.

Place: Choose a place where you can meet with God without being disturbed. God wants you to concentrate when facing Him.

Time: Find the most appropriate time where you can consistently meet with God. Remember though, the goal is to remain in close fellowship and awareness of Him all the day.

Plan: Choose a book in the Bible to read at your own rate, then meditate, record, pray and obey.

Getting ready to meet with God Pray: ―Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.‖ (Ps. 119:18)
Prepare: Collect the things you need and find a quiet place. Prepare your heart, wait on God. Confess your sins
Seek God: Carefully read a verse or Scripture portion. Meditate on how it relates to you. Talk with God about what you read.
Follow Through

Obey what God reveals to you. Share with others what you have learned.

what God reveals to you. Share with others what you have learned.

Developing your Devotional Life

Be faithful in keeping your daily devotions. Persevere in keeping your daily devotions; make the time a part of your daily life.

  1. It is your decision to daily meet with God. If you keep a daily time with God, you will find that you will grow in your spiritual life.

  1. While Jesus was on this earth He said, ―But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness‖ (Mat. 6:33). In all the things that you encounter in this world, there is nothing that is more important than you being with God. If you are too busy to spend time with God you are too busy!

  1. One of God‘s goals is for you to have fellowship with Him and to know Him. Your goal should be to praise and worship God. Although devotions will bring you many good feelings, new insights and many blessings, the main purpose of doing devotions is to know and worship God.

For Further Study This Week:

As you grow in your prayer and devotional life it is important to recognize that the Christian life is not only about your personal relationship with God, but also about God‘s redemptive plan to reconcile all things for His Glory. We are called to go and engage the world around us with the Gospel!

Read Psalm 139:13-16 & Acts 17:24-28. What sort of theme do you see when you read these verses?
